3D printing has made the creation of numerous products a lot easier. While it requires a heavy investment, many manufacturers are experimenting printing parts with the help of this innovative technology. BMW is one of those companies that is experimenting with 3D printing in hopes of manufacturing its bikes with the technology soon.
BMW motorcycle technology is known around the world as the top of the class. The company has invested around $12.3 million in a facility in Germany that experiments with 3D printing. The facility has already started employing 3D printing and has already created a chassis of the BMW S1000RR, the frame and swing arm were printed. The successful printing of the chassis shows that the possibilities are endless for BMW bikes production with the help of 3D printing.
If you are a fan of MotoGP then you are already aware of the BMW S 1000 RR. In 2014, Michael Dunlop won four races riding the bike and making history. In the following years, the S 1000 RR was driven by Peter Hickman and won the Macau Grand Prix twice in 2015 and 2016. The bike is fairly light-weight at just 456 lbs, however, the race model of the bike weighs almost half that. It pretty much feels like you are just floating on air as you ride the bike.
